Axar Patel was not picked in India’s playing XI for the first test against the West Indies in Ahmedabad.

The first test between Indian Cricket Team and West Indies Cricket Team began on Thursday, October 2, at the Narendra Modi International Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad. Both teams will clash in two test matches during the series, which is part of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27.

India, after losing the toss, were asked to field first and they went with the combination of three all-rounders, one spinner and two frontline pacers. With Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja being first choice spin-bowling all-rounders, and Nitish Kumar Reddy getting a chance, this meant that Axar Patel had to face the unfortunate snub despite having a great record with bat and ball in home tests.

Axar Patel, who wasn’t in the side for England test tour, made a comeback to the test team for the West Indies series. His record in tests at his home ground, Narendra Modi International Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad, is exceptional and his snub came as a massive surprise.

The Indian all-rounder has played three test matches at the venue so far, one against Australia and two against England. At an average of 40.66, he has scored 122 runs, including one half-century.

With the ball, he has clinched 22 wickets at an average of 12.22. The spin-bowling all-rounder has registered three five-wicket hauls at the stadium, including best bowling figures of 6/38 against England. He last played a test match in February 2024 against England and since then hasn’t got the opportunity to represent India in whites.

So far, Axar has played 14 tests in his career. The 31-year-old has scored 646 runs at an average of 35.89. With highest score of 84 runs, he has hit four half-centuries. Bowling left-arm orthodox spin, he has captured 55 wickets in 27 innings at an average of 19.35, including five fifers and two four-wicket hauls.
