KL Rahul hit only his second century in test cricket in India.

India opener KL Rahul was over the moon as he held up the Indian top-order for the better part of day one and the early morning of day two of the ongoing first test against the West Indies.

India resumed their innings at 121/2 on the second day of the first test, with Shubman Gill (18*) and Rahul (53*) at the crease. In his first test as India captain in India, Shubman Gill scored 50 runs before being dismissed.

KL Rahul went on to reach his century in 190 balls with 12 fours. After his 199 against England in Chennai in 2016, this was his second test century in India and his eleventh overall.

Rahul has done a fantastic job as the opener. He was granted the permanent position after Rohit Sharma retired, and he has excelled in it. He will undoubtedly become one of the greatest Indian cricket players of all time if he continues on his current trajectory.

Yeah, it has. Really enjoyed my batting. Playing in different conditions. England was fun. Obviously, getting runs there gives you a lot of confidence, and coming into this game with some runs behind me also helped. Feeling fresher after a longish break after the series. Yeah, I really enjoyed being back. (Were you nervous?) No, not really. Because I just played a game last week (for India A). So yeah, I was a bit nervous playing there because I haven’t been on the field for a good 5-6 weeks. So just to get back into that rhythm, just to get back into getting runs and spending time in the field and coming in day after day for 4-5 days is a bit of a challenge physically as well,” KL Rahul said after the end of day two.

After KL Rahul had completed his century, his 11th for India in tests, he was seen celebrating his ton by taking off his helmet and acknowledging the crowd and his Indian teammates by raising his bat. Rahul then put his middle and ring fingers in his mouth in a unique celebration.

Many speculated that KL Rahul was whistling in his celebration, while others argued that his celebration was for his daughter Evaarah, who was born in March this year, just before Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 began. Even Rahul’s wife Athiya Shetty reacted to his celebration on Instagram.

In the same conversation after the end of day two’s play, KL Rahul confirmed that the celebration was for his daughter.

“(About the celebration) It was for my daughter,” Rahul confirmed.
