Mohun Bagan announce arrival of experienced defender Mehtab Singh ahead of ACL 2 campaign

Mehtab Singh joins the Mariners after five seasons with Mumbai City FC.

Mehtab Singh has officially joined Mohun Bagan Super Giant on a five-year deal after moving from Mumbai City FC. The defender joins the Mariners for an undisclosed fee. The 27-year-old defender completed his medical and will link up with the squad for training on Saturday.

Despite uncertainty hanging over the upcoming ISL season, with many clubs halting signings and even skipping the Durand Cup, Mohun Bagan have stayed active.

The reigning Shield and Cup holders featured in the 2025 Durand Cup, where they fell to East Bengal in the quarterfinals. However, their squad depth has only improved with new arrivals such as Abhishek Singh, Kiyan Nassiri, and now Mehtab Singh.

Mehtab Singh elated to have joined Mohun Bagan

Talking to Mumbai Bagan’s media after joining the club, Mehtab Singh said that it was his dream to play for the Mariners.

The 27-year-old said, “The dream of playing for Mohun Bagan is for every Indian player as Mohun Bagan Super Giant are very prestigious. It was also my dream to represent the Maroon and Green. The players who play in the team from around the world are very respected and experienced and the reputation of Mohun Bagan is unquestionable.”

“I have been to the ISL for a while now, and I have also played in the AFC Champions League twice. I hope that I will be playing for this club in the AFC Champions League 2 on 16th September. From my end, I would like to share my experience from the Champions League with everyone and I will try to gel as fast as possible with the team. I hope that I can help the team and hopefully try to win in the AFC Champions League Two.”

This won’t be Mehtab’s first foray in Kolkata, as the defender has previously played for East Bengal. The 27-year-old represented the Red and Gold Brigade in the 2017-18 and 2019-20 I-League seasons. He was also part of Gokulam Kerala before becoming a multi-time ISL champion with Mumbai City.

Mehtab’s legacy Mumbai City FC

Mehtab Singh became a crucial and dependable part of Mumbai City FC success in his five-year stint at the club. The defender won two ISL Shields and two ISL Cups during his time with the Islanders and also became a regular with the Indian national football team.

Aside from domestic competitions, Mehtab also represented MCFC in the AFC Champions League in two separate seasons. The Indian international played 10 games in Asia’s top club competition, but his side failed to make it past the group stage on both occasions.

It is clear that Mohun Bagan Super Giant are keen to do well in the AFC Champions League 2 this season. They have added depth to their already strong defence as they look to go deep into the tournament and maybe even try to become the first Indian club to win the AFC Champions League two.
