Light in build but strong on his feet with excellent ball control, Fanai was picked from the Subroto Cup Schools tournament by the Pune FC assistant coach, Gift Raikhan. The prodigal midfielder repaid the trust of the Pune coach by helping their under-19 squad win the under-20 I-League in 2012 and 2013. At the age of 16, he made his professional debut for Pune FC in 2013 and was soon selected for the national team for the 2014 AFC under-19 championship qualifiers and debuted against Qatar. Fanai made three appearances for FC Pune City in Hero ISL 2015 but appeared only twice for NorthEast United last season. For the coming one, he would want to get some precious game-time.
